I took the kids for their yearly check-ups today. You would have thought they were headed to the park. They were so excited to be there, and I had already warned Madelyn that she would have to get 4 shots. They were hamming it up so much that a nurse, who wasn't working with the kids, popped her head in the exam room and jokingly said, "I'm glad your kids are so shy." They really did well, and Madelyn was very brave when it came time for her shots. She didn't shed a tear or really even flinch. They both got to pick out special toys, and as I was walking with them to get the toys, a nurse piped in with "You should get the "Mom of the Year" award. You make our job so much easier." While I appreciate the compliment, I thought, "If you only knew..." (in regards to me, not the kids).
The kids are growing well and Madelyn actually measured above the 50th percentile in height for the first time in her life. Here are the stats:
Madelyn:
33 lbs--30%
40.5 inches --60%
Pierce:
28 lbs--49%
35 inches--71%
*****Addendum*****
I forgot a few funny things that Madelyn said about/during her visit:
1. She informed me that peeing in a cup was REALLY cool.
2. Dr. Martin asked her to draw a circle and a square. Her response: Well, circles are easy. [She drew a circle.] I have trouble with squares, but I know they have 4 sides. How about I draw you a triangle instead? [She then drew a triangle.]
3. I saw a car in the parking lot from Mississippi. I mentioned the car to Madelyn.
Me: That car is from Mississippi.
Madelyn: Why did they name the car?
Me: Huh?
Madelyn: Why did they name the car Miss Sippy?

Circus
We went to the circus yesterday and had a fabulous time. JD took the morning off, and we headed into the city for a fun-filled morning. The kids absolutely loved it and are still talking about it. It was difficult to get good pictures because of the lighting and all of the movement. Here are a few pictures of the highlights.
The kids were mesmerized at the beginning:
There were 7 motorcycles going around this cage. It was crazy, and I think we were all a bit nervous:
The elephants were a big hit:
The kids after 2.5 hours, still mesmerized:

Last Ballet Class
Today was the last day for this session of the ballet class that Madelyn has been taking. Today, the teacher let us come in and watch. It is really funny to watch these little girls. Not that I didn't already know this, but Madelyn is a chatter box. Her teacher had to gently shush her more than once. Here are some pictures from this morning. We'll start back up in a few weeks.

Our news
We are expecting baby number three! We are very, very excited. I'm a little over 12 weeks pregnant, and the baby is due Sept. 22. I'm slowly coming out of the morning sickness blah, which for me is usually all day blah. Food is starting to seem appetizing again, but I still feel pretty rough in the evenings.
I have had two ultrasounds so far. The first was to date the pregnancy, so we got to see and hear the heartbeat at 9 weeks. Here are a couple of pictures from that ultrasound. The first is the normal shot and the second is what is called a "4D" ultrasound picture.
Yesterday, we went back for our second appointment and took the kids. We had not told them about the baby. When we walked into the exam room, Madelyn told JD that she had been there before "when Pierce was in Mommy's belly." Pretty good memory, huh? She wasn't even two. So, we told her we were going to see if there was another baby in my belly. When the doctor began the ultrasound, Madelyn was a bit distressed, and we figured out that she thought that the doctor had cut my belly open so that we could see the baby. Once we showed her that all was well with me, she got excited.
Of all the ultrasounds I've had, this was my favorite. The difference that occurred in three weeks is unbelievable. The baby really looks like a baby now, and it has tripled in size in just three weeks. Not that I hadn't realized it before, but I'm am more amazed than ever at the miracle of life. When we first saw the baby, it was just hanging out in the womb. It had it's legs crossed at the ankles and seemed so laid back. Madelyn says this is the "relaxed look."
Baby just chillin':
The doctor took a few measurements but needed the baby to move, so he could get a few more. He pressed on my stomach a little bit, and this little guy/girl went to town. Madelyn said, "It's waving!"
Baby wave:
Here are a couple of 4D shots:
Sweet conversation that took place on the way home:
Madelyn: How did the baby get in your belly?
Me: God decided our family needed a new baby, so he gave us one.
Madelyn: Was God holding the baby in his arms in Heaven and decide that you would take good care of the baby?
Me: Madelyn, I couldn't have said it any better. (As I wiped a tear from my eye.)
Madelyn didn't stop talking about the baby all day yesterday. The doctor gave her and Pierce ultrasound pictures and Madelyn has taken hers everywhere. Pierce seems to have a pretty good idea about what's going on and keeps asking to see the "baby movie"(referring to watching the ultrasound on the TV). He is pacified when he sees his ultrasound picture. Every time we pray, Madelyn makes sure we pray for the baby. I'm not sure how she's going to control her excitement for 28 or so more weeks.
Okay, that's it for now. I'll keep you posted on the baby news as it happens.

Birthday Celebrations
The birthday celebrations are now over. I'm kinda relieved. My parents came up two weekends ago, bearing many, many gifts. Madelyn received a bicycle, which she just loves. We've had beautiful weather the last few days, so she's been able to enjoy it. Pierce received a tool station, and both of the kids really like that. I'll eventually get around to posting pictures of them enjoying these gifts.
On Saturday, we had a birthday party for our kids and their cousins because their birthdays are all within one month of each other. We had a good time celebrating with the family, and the kids were once again showered with presents.
And today is Pierce's birthday. My baby boy is two years old. He continues to be a very friendly, bubbly, energetic, and opinionated child. It's interesting how close the personalities of Madelyn and Pierce appear to be. It's like they only have a one chromosome difference. We aren't having a separate party for Pierce. I learned with Madelyn that the kids don't really care about birthdays until they're three, so I decided not to put that stress on myself this year. However, we did have a little celebration this morning, and we put a candle in Pierce's waffle and let him open a couple of gifts. We bought him a pair of croc-style shoes in the shape of Lightning McQueen, and I had a hard time convincing him that he would be more comfortable at naptime by taking them off. I finally won.

In like a lion
March came in with a loud roar to the DC area, and we were left with about 7 inches of snow and frigid temperatures. Madelyn was actually a little under the weather and wasn't all that interested in playing in the snow. She did eventually venture out. Here are some pictures of Pierce in his interesting snow outfit. We had to get very creative since the snow was so deep and it was so cold.
